National Suicide Prevention Network

Mikeysline is a founding member, representing Scotland as part of the Four Nations approach with our CEO, Emily Stokes, sitting on the Advisory Board of the Network.

The aims of the NSPN are as follows:

Understanding and addressing the root causes of suicide
Making support accessible
Fostering collaboration and coordinated action
Reducing the stigma surrounding suicide

Shinty Toolkit

‘Caman and Courage’ is a digital mental wellbeing toolkit developed in collaboration with Mikeysline and the Camanachd Association. Created to support positive conversations around mental health in the shinty community, it brings together advice, videos and practical resources for players, parents, guardians and coaches.

Supporting Guidance

The multi-agency ‘After a Suicide’ project is a partnership of Highland charities including Mikeysline, Change Mental Health and James Support Group, collaborating with NHS Highland, Police Scotland, Highland Council and others with an interest in and/or providing mental health, suicide prevention and bereavement support in Highland.

With a focus on the delivery of timely, compassionate, supportive and effective responses for both those bereaved and those impacted by a suicide, the aim of the project is to minimise wider suicide risk and improve mental health outcomes for individuals bereaved by suicide, whilst tackling stigma and signposting to support available.

Guidance and resources were produced including a pack for those bereaved by suicide; a leaflet to raise awareness of the impact of suicide on anyone; plus a suite of films with powerful and emotive lived experience stories focusing on postvention, bereavement, stigma and impact. These were spotlighted at events across Highland for communities and since at Scotland wide forums.

We include the links to these films below along with guidance notes aimed at both adults and young people if showing to a group of people in schools or at wider awareness events.

Our project continues to evolve with more agencies interested in the resources produced across Scotland and a further film currently being developed, so our aim to continue the conversation around suicide, continues..

Dr Mairi Keenleyside

I am very enthusiastic to join the Board of Mikeysline having seen the real commitment and innovation of staff and volunteers. I have heard first-hand how reaching out to Mikeysline has helped people in diverse circumstances. Having grown up in the north of Scotland, I am aware of the complexity of delivering Mental Health interventions over an extensive rural/semirural area and the importance of community involvement.

I have spent most of my career working for the Health Service Executive in Ireland as a Clinical Psychologist where I initially worked with children, then in Adult Mental Health and later in health service management. Since returning to Scotland, I work part time as a Principal Clinical Psychologist where I am part of a Community Mental Health Team in NHS Highland. I can see the very important role that third sector organisations have in working collaboratively with the statutory agencies.

I hope to assist the Board by bringing my therapy experience, background in clinical governance and service development, as well as research to the organisation. I also have a strong interest in the Outdoors and the role it can play in helping people lead valuable, healthy lives in this unique environment.

Katy MacLeod

I have worked in the mental health and social care sector for the last twenty years across frontline and management roles of third sector services. This work has involved working in community projects, residential services and festival and nightlife settings. I currently work for a national substance use charity, managing the research and public and patient involvement work for the organisation which includes supporting people with lived and living experience of substance use and mental health to be meaningfully involved in research, ensuring their voices are at the heart of improving support services and informing drug and alcohol policy. I also work clinically as a psychotherapist for a charity supporting people affected by trauma and homelessness. More recently, I have trained in clinical supervision and use these skills to help individuals and organisations within the health and social care sectors to prevent and support work-related stress and burnout.

Through my work and own experience, I know how crucial it is to get help to people at the right time in order to prevent suicide. I understand that anyone can experience mental health problems and see that issues such as poverty, deprivation, exclusion, and isolation are intrinsically linked with poor mental health. I am interested in using the beauty of the Highlands to support wellbeing and am passionate about building greater inclusivity in our communities for those that experience marginalisation and stigma. I hope to bring my frontline experience and my passion for learning from the voices of people with lived experience to the incredible work of Mikeysline. The organisations’ low threshold access to their services and literally meeting people where they are at via the ‘Hive on the Road’ service combined with the dedication of the staff and volunteer team inspired me to join the Board and I am glad to be part of such an important service.

John Robertson

John, former sporting director of Inverness Caledonian Thistle FC and now assistant Manager at Ross County FC, understands first-hand how pressure and personal loss can affect your mental health and wellbeing.
John himself has suffered from mental health issues and wishes he’d spoken to someone about it sooner.
He’s dedicated to raising awareness of Mikeysline within the local community so those in need of help know we are here to support them.
At Mikeysline there is always someone willing to listen, with no judgement or stigma attached. John has always been a big supporter of ours and is absolutely delighted to lend his name and support to the charity because he believes looking after your mental health and wellbeing is hugely important.

Dave Rogers

Ambassador

Manager to musical superstar and fellow ambassador, Callum Beattie, Dave Rogers joined Mikeysline to help highlight the impact of mental health and suicide. Having visited some of the local businesses that support Mikeysline’s ‘Bee the Change’ campaign, Dave has shared his admiration for the work happening across the Highlands and his commitment to play his part.

Callum Beattie

Ambassador

Scottish musician Callum Beattie is a huge champion of Mikeysline, and a passionate mental health advocate, raising awareness of our cause through his songwriting and platform. Having experienced personal loss due to suicide, much of what Callum does is to help others. For the past four years he’s supported charities and causes alongside manager Dave, who has also joined Mikeysline as an ambassador.

Ewan MacDonald

Corporate Ambassador

Ewan is the managing partner of insurance firm Partners&, as well as a three-time Olympic curler.
Our first corporate ambassador, Ewan is well versed in growth, awareness-building and fundraising, especially within the business sector.
Working with contacts from both the business and sporting worlds, he’ll act as role model to business leaders in supporting mental health initiatives in the workplace and the community, while increasing Mikeysline’s network, and bringing new opportunities.

Siobhan Mackenzie

Award-winning fashion designer, and Black Isle born, Siobhan, launched her self-named label in 2014, aged just 21.She’s since designed exclusive items for Justin Bieber, Team Scotland at the Commonwealth Games, Caorunn Gin, LVMH Group and many others, as well as designing limited edition Mikeysline scarf.
Delighted to help raise the Mikeysline profile, Siobhan’s supported our annual Burns Supper and Bee the Change campaign.

Steven Ferguson

The Chief Executive of Scottish Premiership side, Ross County FC, uses his sporting profile to bring Mikeysline to the attention of a demographic who otherwise, may not know much about us.
As the footballing community become more aware of the importance of mental health alongside physical fitness, Steven hopes to play his role in ensuring everyone who needs support has access to it and knows that it’s ok not to be ok.

Karen Gillan

Ambassador

Based in L.A, the Inverness born actress maintains strong links with the Highlands. Recognised for her extensive television and film work, including Dr Who and as Nebula in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Karen visited our Inverness Hive in November 2018 during a visit home for the Inverness Film Festival to showcase her directorial debut “The Party’s Just Beginning”, a film she wrote and starred in about a woman from Inverness to cope with the loss of her friend to suicide.
Karen’s a great supporter of our charity, and became an official ambassador August 2020, helping raise the profile of Mikeysline on a national and international level.

I recently retired as Managing Director of Gordon & MacPhail, after spending over 30 years working in the Scotch Whisky industry. Over this time, I have seen the changes to how businesses look after the well-being of their colleagues, especially mental health. However, there is still so much more to be done to increase the awareness of the issue and support people, both in the business environment and wider society.

Jackie Cuddy

Recently I have become more and more aware of the demand on Mikeysline and the excellent work the charity does in the north of Scotland. The fact that the Highlands has one of the highest suicide rates in the country is heartbreaking, and the work that Mikeysline does is so important in reducing those figures. Having now retired after 18 years managing the Eastgate Centre in Inverness, I am keen to support Mikeysline using the skills and experience I have built up throughout my career – both in the workplace and as a charity board member and fundraiser. Following my experience of breast cancer in 2007, I joined the board of Maggie’s and organised fundraising events – including bringing together multiple cancer charities for the first time in Inverness. I also spent time on the board of The Archie Foundation, where I ran a number of successful fundraising events. Now, having worked alongside Mikeysline at the Eastgate Centre, I am delighted to join the board to help develop the charity’s fundraising events programme, which will support the essential work they carry out for people in our communities.

Beth Simco

I have a background in social and economic development of the local area through a range of social and capital projects. Latterly, my employment has moved to the private sector where I work with and represent range of clients within grid and associated infrastructure related projects.

In addition to my employment, I have also co-founded a charity: Sutherland Adventure Company. The charity aims to provide opportunities for the local community to utilise their natural assets through affordable sessions out on the water to support mental health, mental clarity and time out in nature for people across Sutherland.

I recognise working and living in remote rural areas comes with its own challenges and barriers – in particular the landscape for delivering and accessing mental health support in isolated areas. I acknowledge there is still a huge amount of work to continue to create awareness of the impact of living and working rurally to individual mental wellbeing.

I am enthused and deepened by the vital work of the team behind Mikeysline. It is an honour to be able to listen and contribute to the team to continue developing services and awareness across Highland, Moray and the islands.

Scott Murray

As much as I hate the word, I am, by definition, an entrepreneur in the hospitality, travel and leisure sectors. I have built my business up over almost 2 decades, and during this time I have worked with hundreds, if not thousands of incredible people from all walks of life. My motivation to get involved with Mikeysline was down to just how many of our own team struggle with anxiety, depression and other mental health issues. We are not big enough to address everything ourselves, so the opportunity to be involved with a local organisation that not only provided support for people in similar situations but also championed mental health awareness among the wider public was too good to turn down. While Mikeysline remains a small, hands-on organisation with the needs of its users at the very heart of what they do, I hope that my commercial experience can be drawn upon when required to add value to an already incredible organisation.

Carolyn Williamson

I have been privileged to be a trustee of Mikeysline since 2016. During that time, I have had the opportunity to meet and work with members of staff, volunteers, fundraisers and trustees and continue to be impressed by the commitment, dedication and enthusiasm for the part that each play in supporting Mikeysline. Although I live in Southampton, I have close family ties to Inverness and keep up to date with life in the Highlands through the local press, social media and regular visits. Mental health affects us all either directly or indirectly and I understand the impact that this and suicide can have on each of us. With a career in HR and Recruitment, I use these skills to help with staff HR and payroll. I am also Secretary to the Board of Trustees.

Nina Gritter

I am a Chartered Accountant and have worked in practice since 2013. I work with business owners and management teams in a wide variety of businesses and industries including landed estates, farming, hospitality and renewables. I deal mostly with compliance and provide advisory support. I also assist clients in improving financial processes and implementing new financial systems, as well as leading a team that acts as an outsourced finance function by looking after bookkeeping, VAT returns and management accounts for clients. Having done some fundraising for Mikeysline in the past and knowing how important the charity is to the local community. I was delighted to have the opportunity to join the Board. I hope I can use the skills I have developed over the years to support Mikeysline to achieve its objectives.

Graham Hutcheon

Like many of you, I have been indirectly touched by the impact of suicide and the hardships experienced by those struggling with their mental health.
As a grassroots organisation, providing support and guidance across the north of Scotland, Mikeysline is at the heart of our communities – from our board members to our colleagues; volunteers to charity ambassadors, we are all working to reduce the stigma surrounding suicide and mental health.
My role as Chairman, in line with my fellow board members, concentrates on ensuring appropriate governance is in place and the overarching purpose of Mikeysline is maintained.
This will enable us to provide invaluable crisis support services and long-term mental health education across our region – all to encourage people, young and old, to reach out for help when they need it most.
As we look to the future, we know demand for our services will continue to grow as more people find their voice and reach out to us for help – it will be my goal to ensure Mikeysline can continue to meet this demand head on.
